Add Subdomains

As it's name would suggest the Add Subdomains section of the control panel is where one would go to add (or delete) a subdomain.

Subdomains are secondary sites which can be accessed using a special URL in the format http://subdomain.maindomain.com

Example:

If your domain name is joespetshop.com you may want to create subdomains such as puppies.joespetshop.com, kittens.joespetshop.com and cat.joespetshop.com

Subdomains are actually just subdirectories of public_html which are afforded special handling such that when they are accessed via the subdomain URL the subdirectory is treated as if it were the root web accessable directory on a separate hosting account.

http://puppies.joespetshop.com = http://joespetshop.com/puppies
http://kittens.joespetshop.com = http://joespetshop.com/kittens
http://tropicalfish.joespetshop.com = http://joespetshop.com/tropicalfish

Creating Subdomains

To create a new subdomain simply enter the name of the subdomain you wish to create and click the Add button.

Deleting Subdomains

To create an existing subdomain just pull down the drop-down list of subdomains, select the one you wish to remove and click the Delete button.

Things to Note

- You can setup a subdomain using an existing subdirectory. If at the time you create your subdomain no folder by that name exists in the public_html directory a folder with the same name as the subdomain will automatically be created.

- Upon creating a subdomain you may receive a somewhat confusingly worded message which may suggest a problem ("ndc: connect failed: connection refused - The subdomain, sub.domain.com has been added"). Proceed to test your new subdomain's functionality, in the absence of any problems this message can be ignored (the key phrase there is "the subdomain has been added").

- Should you find that you either cannot create a subdomain or that subdomains you have created are not functioning properly please submit a trouble ticket and we will address any problems.

- After creating subdirectories try to be consistant and set all links to reference your subdomain URL. Keep in mind that the behavior of relative links calling files outside of the subdomain folder will not function properly when accessing using a subdirectory URL. If you must link to or call a file stored somewhere other than the subdomain folder use absolute links (the full URL of the file, ex: http://domain.com/images/pic.gif rather than ../images/pic.gif)

- Unlike main/primary domains by default subdomains do not support use of the www. prefix (http://www.subdomain.maindomain.com will not work)

- Webalizer stats are maintained separately for subdomains, to view the statistics analysis reports for a given subdomain enter the URL http://subdomain.maindomain.com/stats into your web browser.

- FTP subaccounts allowing access only to the subdomain and directories below it can be created under FTP Accounts in your FTP Manager.

- Email accounts which reference subdomains are not available (you can create an account named subdomain@maindomain.com however creating an account user@subdomain.maindomain.com is not supported)
